CW Research: India December imported petcoke prices fall 2%+

December prices of high-sulfur imported petcoke decreased by more than 2 percent MoM for both CFR East and West coasts of India, according to CW Research's December update of India Petcoke CFR price assessment.

The monthly update sees the average cost of burning high sulfur petcoke on $/mmBTU basis at a discount of more than 25 percent as compared to Richards Bay coal.

ÔÇ£Richards Bay coal prices are expected to increase in the short term. This, when combined with the fact that Saudi producers are already booked for January-February delivery, signals an expected increase in the price of high sulfur petcoke from the US Gulf Coast.ÔÇØ said Sushmita Rai, Sr. Associate Analyst, CW Group.

The cost of production of a large number of cement companies has reduced due to increased usage of low cost petcoke and alternative fuels.

Notably, prices of fuel grade petcoke delivered to India on CFR basis have stabilized in December as compared to the fluctuations experienced in the September- November period. CW Research expects to see petcoke prices increasing in Q1/2016.

India's total November imports of uncalcined petcoke exceeded 0.6 million tons. Petcoke imports by cement companies accounted for 55.0 percent of the total petcoke volume imported.
