On May 8, 2009, Mr. Martin Ferguson, Australia's Federal Minister for Resources and Energy opened a A$4 million state of the art plant to handle hazardous waste at Cement Australia and stop thousands of tonnes of waste going to landfill. The system, developed by Geocycle, the Australian waste transformation business, was started in 2007.

The effort followed a policy change by the Victorian government on landfill levies on industrial waste, which placed a ban on particular waste categories from going to landfill. This policy was designed to divert material away from landfill and encourage businesses to invest in more sustainable technologies. Geocycle has allowed Cement Australia to use the waste as fuel in its operations.
