Year-to-date through June, petcoke production in India, Brazil, and Spain was boosted by the gradual recovery of the construction industries after almost two years of downturn caused by the pandemic. In China, production increased marginally as refineries seek to return to full capacity. “Petcoke production has been increasing on the back of growing demand. Meanwhile, prices have been stabilizing as freight rates continue to ease”, explained Wanderson Teixeira, Business Analyst at CW Group. India sees significant rise in petcoke production as industry recovers For the year-to-date through June, green petcoke production was up by more than 23 percent in India while on a year-on-year basis there was an increase of almost 16 percent. Construction activity indicators have witnessed significant growth since the Covid-19 outbreak, while the government´s investments in several infrastructure projects have led to a spike in demand. Brazil posts strong expansion after pandemic-driven drops In Brazil, green petcoke production increased over 15 percent year-on-year in June. In the first six months of 2022, green petcoke production was up by almost 10 percent. Following a period of steep decline due to the pandemic, the civil construction sector reported a strong expansion of almost 10 percent, up from a 6 percent decrease in the previous year. Increase in demand helps boost production in Spain During the first six months of 2022, green petcoke production in Spain rose by more than 6 percent compared to the same period last year. Year-on-year, production improved by almost 24 percent in June due to an increase in demand after a period of domestic dampening caused by the pandemic. China with small increase in petcoke production In 1H2022, Chinese, green petcoke production increased by 0.1 percent compared to the same period last year. Month-on-month, there was a production increase of almost 3 percent and, year-on-year, a decrease of nearly 2 percent, as refiners are still not able to run at full capacity because of the adoption of Covid-19 control measures in several parts of the country.
