Sappi Europe's Kirkniemi Mill, situated in Lohja, Finland, has marked a significant achievement in its journey towards sustainability by shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy for producing the Galerie paper range. With a substantial investment of Euro 16.5 million, the mill has embraced cutting-edge facilities and machinery to efficiently manage biofuels. This transition is in line with Sappi's commitment to achieving its Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-approved emissions reduction goals globally.

The Kirkniemi Mill has transitioned to using locally sourced biomass residues, such as bark, sawdust, and wood chips, to power its Galerie paper operations. This shift has led to an impressive 90 percent reduction in direct fossil greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the mill's multi-fuel boiler, established in 2015, has enabled an annual reduction of nearly 230,000 tons of carbon dioxide. By embracing renewable energy sources, the Kirkniemi Mill has reduced the carbon footprint of the Galerie paper range by 40 percent. This achievement reflects the mill's unwavering commitment to sustainability, driving continuous enhancements in environmental performance across various aspects, including freshwater usage, watercourse emissions, and energy efficiency.

As the world's largest coated publication paper mill, Kirkniemi Mill plays a pivotal role in producing a diverse range of paper products. Sappi, a global leader in sustainable wood fiber products and solutions, offers a wide portfolio encompassing dissolving pulp, printing papers, packaging and specialty papers, casting and release papers, as well as biomaterials and bioenergy.
