Spain: Abo├▒o Cement granted clearance for alternative fuels

The company has been allowed to burn waste material to help power its cement kilns. The company will use waste materials like plastics and tires. It adds that the move would help it reduce costs. The authorization came as cement plants in other plants of the country which burn alternative fuels were ordered to stop burning waste materials.

The decision has also prompted opposition from environmental groups who claimed burning waste poses a threat to the environment and health. Burning waste they say releases dioxin and other chemicals in the air as well as heavy metals. These contaminants they say cause pollution and can pose a health risk even at low exposure levels. {reg}
