While this new invention paves the way for ecologically repairing structures at cost effective rates, the major disadvantage lies in controlling the spread of the bacteria within the structure. Uncontrolled proliferation may result in other devastating consequences. To prove as a safe alternative to repair cracks, the bacterium must also be permitted to identify original concrete cracks from any other gaps in a structure, thus preventing it unnecessary multiplying and secreting glues in other places.

Promoters of this program are devising ways of overcoming this problem by helping the bacterium recognize the ph structure of concrete. A self destructive mechanism is also being looked into.
